Attractions include wooden monuments, bracelets, baskets, key holders, hats, bags, wall hangings, pots, drums and a host of other locally made items. These portray the royal regalia of Buganda, nice handmade items like baskets, items crafted from backcloth and sisal among others.

The center is open all week, and one can purchase all cultural and craft items.

Tourists have turned to cheaper destinations all over the world due to the financial crisis.

As liquidity dries up, inflation increases, commodity prices rise and consumer demand falls, the tourism and travel sectors have drastically altered as consumers are resorting to rationing and scouting for affordable items.

Insurance Expert Tower Gate Bakers, at the just concluded World Travel Market (WTM) held in November 10 to 13 in London, said 65 per cent of Britons will be switching to cheaper holiday destinations over the next 12 months so as to beat the crunch.
Uganda is one of the countries in the world, with a range of attractions including half of the remaining mountain gorillas, over 1010 bird species, over 10 different primate species and the “big five”. Uganda is also home to the Source of the Nile Africa’s longest river and Lake Victoria, Africa’s largest lake. In the western part of the country the Rwenzori Mountain block with its glacier peaks offers the best mountaineering experience in Africa while a trip to Ssese Islands is a real back to nature safari retreat!

Looking at the tourism sector’s performance in 2007, almost 642,000 tourists visited Uganda compared to 540,000 in 2006. This number is considered the highest Uganda has ever experienced and thus represents an increase of almost 19 percent over the year before.

Uganda handicraft Business has boomed over years given the increasing number of new dealers.
However, traders in the different sectors of handcrafts have started experiencing the effects of the global financial turmoil following a reduced number of top customers especially from Europe.

Mr. Gregory Ssemakula, the chairman of Uganda Art Collectors Association said the period stretching from September into the New year, tourists and retailers from London, Italy, France, America, Israel and Canada usually place big handcrafts orders but that the situation has been different this year.

Foreign traders have in recent years discovered Uganda as a haven for handcrafts like mats, hand bags, sandals, drums, souvenirs, ear rings, and necklaces among others, selling them in their home gift shops and at auctions.

26 leaders, from African countries meet in Kampala today at the Tripartite summit.

The summit bringing together leaders of the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (Comesa), the East African Community (EAC) and the Southern African Development and Coordination Community (Sadc) regional blocs, is called to harmonise and coordinate trade, customs and infrastructure development in the East and Southern African region.

The summit is expected to endorse decisions of the council of ministers, which called for the creation of a free trade area cutting across the three regional economic communities (Recs).

The meeting is being attended by the new South African President, Mr Kgalema Motlanthe, also chair of Sadc, Sadc Deputy Executive Secretary General Samuel Caholo Joao, Kenya’s Mwai Kibaki,President Jakaya Kikwete of Tanzania, chairman Comesa and Rwandan President, Paul Kagame, heading the EAC, Zimbabwe’s Robert Mugabe, Sudan’s Omar El Bashir and Dr Bingu Wa Mutharika of Malawi.
